Conditions for the importation of household goods and personal effects.

Household googs importation to Mauritious what to bring and what not - duty and and tax structure, customs procediures and documentation requirements are provided here for Mauritious  returning citizens and foreigners.


Returning residents and expatriates are allowed duty and VAT exemption on used household and personal effects to the following conditions:

(a)        The importer is a permanent resident of Mauritius and has not renounced to the citizenship of Mauritius. In case the importer is an expatriate, a residence/work permit will be required.  
(b)        He is returning to Mauritius for good after residence abroad.

The conditions for exemption of duty/VAT specify that any passenger who

(1) On his first arrival satisfies the comptroller of customs that he is taking up permanent residence in Mauritius; or

(2) Is a permanent resident of Mauritius and is returning to Mauritius after residence abroad.

Shall be entitled to exemption on household and personal effects (such as furniture, pictures, paintings, bedding, linen, cutlery, crockery, silver and plated ware, sewing machine, radio set, television set,

Computer set, musical instrument, refrigerator, cooking stove, barbecue, heater, air conditioner, telephone set, typewriter, lawn mower, perambulator, bicycle, ladder, garden furniture, exerciser, or any keep fit apparatus indoor and outdoor games, water sport equipment, camping tents, and similar articles for domestic use.

Provided that:

(I) Those articles have been in the possession and use abroad of that person for not less than one year and are not intended for sale or transfer;

(ii) Those articles are actually owned by that person and accompany him or are imported within such period as the comptroller may approve; and

(iii) Where these articles do not accompany that person, that person has, on arrival, declared to the comptroller of customs their intended importation giving full particulars of the articles to be imported.    

Documents needed for the clearing of household goods & personal effects.

Mauritius passport or residence/work permit, inventory with values, original bill of lading, freight invoice, letter to certify ownership of P. Effects for more than one year. For articles less than one year, invoices from suppliers must be produced.

The returning resident should produce a passport memo obtainable from the passport and immigration office of Mauritius.  

The agricultural authorities strictly control importation of agricultural derived products. It is recommended to fumigate the consignment. The shipment has to be supported by such certificate to avoid further inspection and investigation.

Drugs (dangerous or not), weapons, firearms, etc are prohibited unless prior authorization and arrangement are made with the concerned authorities.    

Charges are payable at destination before delivery or by telegraphic transfer according to the following bank details:

Payment before delivery, clearing of household goods takes usually more than 6 days because of customs formalities, customer must be informed of possible delay and payment of demurrages & storage charges.


Goods must be consigned to Name and Address of Client, Notify Somatrans/SDV

The Goods must be consigned to the name of the client and notified to Somatrans.
